DIY Valentine's Day Card

Happy Valentine's Day!... Well almost.

I think for a lot of us a homemade card means a whole lot more than one you went and bought at the store last minute. Cards are good to give to your significant other, your friends, your colleagues, your neighbors, and even strangers ( But be careful. Stranger danger kids!). Cards are one of my favorite things, because it's such a simple gesture, but can easily make someone's day. No matter the person, learn to make this simple Valentine's Day card, it's sure to not disappoint.

Supplies

  • 1 5x7 Paper ( I used watercolor paper, but if all you have is cardstock that will work!)
  • 17x7 Paper (This can be cardstock, or any sturdy paper)
  • 1 Scrap piece of paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Watercolors (If you don't have this you can use any paint, or even colored pencils or markers.)
  • Paintbrush
  • Cup of water

Step 1

First, on our 7x5 watercolor paper we are going to draw a small circle in the top left hand side of the paper. Make sure to leave room around the circle so we can draw in our petals next.

Step 2

Next we are going to create the heart shaped petals. If you would like to keep the petals uniform draw a heart on your scrap piece of paper and cut it out with your scissors. You will use this as a template for the petals.

Place your template or draw freehand 6 hearts around the circle you drew earlier. The petals should be evenly space, or close to it. If you are struggling to get them evenly spaced remember the petals are going to be exactly across from each other.  **Remember to draw lightly**

I cropped one of my petals off the page to add visual interest.

Step 3

Next using a red watercolor, paint the petals. Remember the more water you use the lighter the color will be.
*** You also don't have to use watercolor. Colored pencils, markers, acrylic paint or patterned paper will work too! Be creative!

Step 4

Next we are going to paint the stem and leaves and center circle. Using a light green create a stretched s shape and a two tear drop shapes for leaves. Using a light yellow paint the inner circle

Step 5

Using your pencil create outlines on the petals, leaves and center. I also drew small hearts in the background and wrote Happy Valentine's Day.

Step 6

To finish your card fold an 7x10 piece of cardstock in half and secure your flower image to the front of the card. This way the card will open and you can write your mushy love letter inside!

Remember you don't have to stick directly to the directions. Here is a card front I made out of patterned paper.
